Youth
The Youth Ministry of WHUMC strives to invite youth into a nurturing environment where we are committed to love, inspire and equip our youth to experience Christ in our daily lives and inspire joyful service to God and others.
Sunday Night Youth Group
This is a time for everyone to get together on Sunday nights (from 5:30 to 7:30 in the CLC) for games, great food and interactive discussions about the Christian faith and how that faith affects our daily lives. As part of the youth group, youth also have the opportunity to participate in a summer mission trip and monthly events. In the past, our events have included the United Methodist Youth Gathering in Springfield, AgapeFest (Christian music festival), and Lock-Ins (just to name a few). After youth group on Sunday, several youth stick around for book club where they can dig deeper into their faith.
Youth Leadership Team
Leadership team provides a unique opportunity for students who have demonstrated themselves to be leaders among their peers. At leadership team meetings youth further develop their leadership abilities by learning skills during interactive activities and by putting the information they learned into practice by planning events for the youth group. The leadership team plays an influential role in planning the summer mission trips and fundraisers.
Confirmation
Youth are typically confirmed in eighth grade. Confirmation involves weekly classes, activities, and a meeting with the pastor. The classes allow youth to learn about the meaning of Christian faith; the history and teachings of The United Methodist church; and an explanation of the baptismal and membership vows they will be professing. Confirmation is the point in a youth’s life when he or she publically reaffirms his or her baptismal vows before the congregation and makes a personal commitment to Christ.
Youth Sunday School
All youth (Grades 6-12) are invited to participate in one of two Youth Sunday School classes on Sunday mornings from 10:10 - 10:50 AM.
1) In the youth room, Mike and Bob discuss Christian Values for today's teens through current events, video lessons, and class particpation.
2) Kristin and Kris lead a Youth Bible Study in the Chapel Room 304. Thought provoking and Bible probing Christian activities are planned to get today's teens involved in the Word of God. Beginning with Philippians 1:1-11 and Acts 16:6-40, Paul's relationship with the Philippians will be xplored. Parents are invited to join as well. No advance reading is required.
